‘Outsourcing’ asylum is a broad term that covers various strategies employed by wealthy countries which aim to limit the amount of migrants that reach them. But how legal is it? North America Events Officer Hugo Carranza considers this global phenomenon with relation to the US, Central America and beyond.

Based on an interview with Emilie McDonnell, DPhil in Law candidate at the University of Oxford, whose research focuses on protecting the right to leave and related human rights of asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants during externalised migration control.
